Industrial design competition challenges students to create products of the future

Industrial design students from Carleton
University, Humber College and the
Ontario College of Art and Design presented
senior year projects in the 2006
Rocket 2006 Industrial Design
Graduation Show & Competition
(acido.info) at the Design Exchange
(dx.org) Toronto.

If our economy is to thrive in future, it
will be from new product design ideas
from students like these. The products will
need to be engineered and manufactured,
so the downstream benefits to industry
will be very positive indeed.

Ilana Ben-Ari won theRocket Award for
her 3D musical puzzle
inspired by visually impaired children and
working with the CNIB (Canadian
National Institute for the Blind). Chris
Paquette and Brian Bosch won the
Transportation Jurorís
Choice award for their wooden boat kit and
received recognition from sponsors
Autodesk Inc. and Nova Product
Development Services Ltd. because,
unlike all the other competitors,
their design is now ready to go to
market (boschandpaquette.com).

A series of playground fixtures called
Animato won the Jurorís Choice award in
the All About Children category. Designers
Andy Cantor and Ursula Tiszai want to
get CSA approvals and take their
designs to market.

Amy Keeler researched the
subcompact car market
to create Smartpac, an
externally-mounted luggage
product with rollers, for the Smart
car. Her design won Honorable Mention
in the transportation category.

Rocket is an Association of Chartered
Industrial Designers of Ontario annual
spring event. The 2006 event was sponsored
by Du Pont, Autodesk, ITW Deltar
and ITW Plastic Molded Components,
Nova Product Development, r+d nienkämper,
Spin Master and Teknion, as well as
the three industrial design schools.
