Ready to plug in an electric RAV4? Tesla and Toyota think so

Written by  DPN Staff July 16, 2010
Tesla Motors and Toyota announced an agreement to initiate the development of an electric version of the RAV4.

With an aim to market the EV in the United States in 2012, prototypes will be made combining the Toyota RAV4 model with a Tesla electric powertrain. Tesla plans to produce and deliver a fleet of prototypes to Toyota for evaluation within this year. The first prototype has already been built and is now undergoing testing.

In May, Tesla and Toyota announced their intent to cooperate on the development of electric vehicles, parts, and production system and engineering support. Tesla seeks to learn and benefit from Toyota’s engineering, manufacturing, and production expertise, while Toyota aims to learn from Tesla’s EV technology.

I'll consider buying one when the " February -40 degree, Saskatchewan Canada" barrier has been achieved. They are definitely a step above the 10 speed tire / spandex suit crowd.

Thanks for your comment, Ed. The total carbon footprint for plug-in electric and hybrid electric vehicles is being challenged more and more. Even wind turbines have a carbon footprint that needs examination.

One thing I've never heard mentioned with regard to electric vehicles is the fact that charging car batteries using the AC supply from your home is the same as burning coal to power your car if your power utility is using coal-fired generators. How is this cleaner than powering your car with gasoline?
