IESO 18-Month Outlook says new electricity supplies will support Ontario’s coal phase-out

Written by  Gillian Marsh September 01, 2010

According to the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) in its latest 18-Month Outlook, “Ontario has sufficient electricity generation and transmission resources available to maintain reliability over the next year and a half.”

With 3,400 megawatts (MW) of new generation expected to come online and an adequate transmission system, Ontario will be able to support operation over the next 18 months. The new supply comes from 1,200 MW of new wind generation, 600 MW of gas-fired generation, and 1,500 MW to come from two nuclear units at the Bruce A Nuclear Station nearing the end of 2011.

As a result of this, Ontario’s goal to eliminate coal-fired generation by 2014 will continue as planned.

“We're in the best supply situation in a decade as a result of the new generation and transmission facilities added over the past five years and we're making good progress towards removing coal from the fuel mix,” said Bruce Campbell, VP of resource integration at Ontario’s IESO. “We're now focussed on adapting system operations to meet tomorrow's challenges.”

  • Piston sealing systems reduce friction

Simrit has developed the Friction Piston Seal T-ring (TR) 200. With the low friction piston seal TR 200, Simrit presents an innovative sealing geometry for the smooth operation of pneumatic cylinders with significantly increased efficiency. Reducing friction by up to 50% compared to conventional systems, the low friction piston seal TR 200 shows minimal wear after 15 million cycles. The dynamic sealing function of the low friction piston seal TR 200 is achieved by a sealing area with a large radius.
