Government of Canada promotes careers in the skilled trades and technology sectors for Alberta youth
Written by Dan Comand February 07, 2011
Alberta youth will have the opportunity to showcase their talents in the skilled trades and learn about career options in the trades and technology sectors, thanks to support from the Government of Canada.
The Honourable Laurie Hawn, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Defence and Member of Parliament of Edmonton Centre, made the announcement on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development.
"In today's environment, it is more important than ever that young Canadians have the skills and information they need to participate and succeed in the job market," said Mr. Hawn. "Our government is proud to support activities like the 2011 Alberta Provincial Skills Canada Competition that benefit both employers and youth."
The public is invited to cheer on high school and post-secondary competitors at the 2011 Alberta Provincial Skills Canada Competition, which is taking place on May 11 and 12 at the Edmonton Exposition and Conference Centre. The event will also include booths featuring information about local industry, businesses and educational institutions, presentations on career and apprenticeship opportunities, and hands-on demonstrations of the skilled trades and other professions.
The Government of Canada is a strong supporter of Skills Canada and its provincial and territorial chapters, which host annual skills competitions and promote careers in the skilled trades and technology sectors to Canadian youth.
Skills Canada Alberta will receive over $169,000 in federal Youth Awareness funding to support the 2011 Alberta Provincial Skills Canada Competition.
