Wireless energy-harvesting devices reduce need for building wiring

When new factories and office buildings are designed and built, thousands of meters worth of cabling are required. Why?

Wires and cables in buildings are mostly used to reach switches and sensors, just so people can turn off lights, live with comfortable air conditioning and heating, and possibly adjust motorized window blinds. Wouldn’t it be great if wireless devices could provide all of this control, as well as do it without the need for battery power?

The Enocean Alliance group of companies (www.enocean.com) has come up with a line of energy-harvesting devices that provide a wireless connection to any building’s environmental controls, including family homes.

These smart sensor devices convert mechanical energy into electrical signals that can be transmitted up to 300 meters on only 50 √ǬµW of power. One Enocean product module, the ECO 100, will even convert this energy into linear motion.

With no room-to-room or floor-to-floor cabling required, think of all the copper wiring that will be saved, creating more sustainable buildings in the future.
