OPTICAL MOTION SENSORS WITH ORTHOGONAL MEASURING AXES

INTACTON, a subsidiary of the FRABA group, has developed an optical sensor system it says can replace contact-based measuring systems in many areas, e.g. in measuring wheel applications. The OPTIPACT system is also said to be the first motion sensor for industrial applications which offers synchronous measurement of two orthogonal axes.

The feature makes it possible to detect two-dimensional movements in any direction, rendering cumbersome adjustment and calibration unnecessary. Because the measuring process is based on an optical correlation method, no external reference pattern is needed. The device is able to directly measure on rough and fine or structured surfaces. Errors caused by slip and accumulated dust or dirt is thereby avoided, which results in considerable benefits for a variety of industrial applications.

OPTIPACT enables direct, reliable measurement of relative movements and speed, ensuring smooth operation and improved accuracy. The sensors are available with a speed range of up to ± 4 m/s. Depending on the model; they have a maximum resolution of 15 µm. The incremental interface of the OPTIPACT makes it a drop-in replacement for incremental encoders with measuring wheels.
