Magnetic multi-turn encoders

The Posital business unit of FRABA Inc. has announced Magnetocode MCD high-resolution absolute magnetic encoders. Units are self-powered, using a patented technology - based on the ‘Wiegand effect’ - that generates a short burst of electric power whenever the shaft rotates.

This is sufficient to measure the change in shaft position (including the direction of rotation) and record the change in non-volatile memory. The encoders provide a maximum resolution of 12 bits per revolution and can register up to 8192 revolutions. MCD encoders are available in solid and hub (blind-hollow) shaft versions. Units are 36.5 mm in diameter and available with analog, SSI and CANopen interfaces.
