MILITARY-DESIGNED ARC BRAKE HAS INDUSTRIAL USES

The Arc Brake from Sepac Inc. was designed for a light weight military sight, but has many industrial uses. Examples include x-ray machines, CAT scanners, NMR imagers, ultrasound and mammography machines that often have an imager mounted on a rotating arm that travels less than 360°. The brake pictured can move 15° from the null position. The same technology for any angle required can be used. Spring applied and electrically released, the 5 in. long brake weighs 1.1 lb and supplies 90 lb ft. of torque. For comparison, a conventional brake that rotates 360° will weigh in the 30 lb range.

The Arc Brake has five stationary inner disks with friction pucks and six rotating outer disks. The steel magnet body and spring loaded armature plate are attached to a stationary surface. Energizing the coil compresses the spring attracting the armature plate allowing the disks to rotate. The brake is said to have very little drag when energized. Although designed as a power off, spring set brake, it can be configured as a power-on or bi-stable (pulse operated). The Arc Brake is currently patent pending.
